GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR APPROVAL

The OECTA PD committee uses the following general guidelines in approving PD requests. Please note that these are guidelines and there may be some flexibility in their application.

1.     The committee will take into consideration any or all of the following: overall cost, overall number of people applying, number of people from same site applying, previous approvals, shared costs, relevance to ALP/teaching assignment/school improvement plans, etc.

2.     A person may be approved for only one major PD activity in a three-year time frame. A major PD activity is defined as one where the total of all expenses is more than $300. More than one minor PD activity may be approved in a two-year time frame.  A minor PD activity is defined as one where the total of all expenses is less than $300.

3.     Accommodations – Conference rates will be used for accommodation approvals and reimbursement - so book early. Shared accommodation is strongly encouraged and may be required as a condition of approval. Generally accommodations will not be approved for conferences and workshop within a reasonable commuting distance. In general, approvals for accommodation will be very limited.

4.     Travel is reimbursed at the board rate of .47cents/km. Shared travel may be required as a condition of approval.

5.     Only expenses that were applied for and approved will be reimbursed. If you do not list all of your expenses initially, you will not be reimbursed for any additional costs that you might attach after the conference. (e.g., if you do not ask for travel, we assume you are not claiming or driving with someone else.)

6.     All approvals will be made with completed forms being submitted to the Wellington OECTA office by the following deadline dates:

i.)                  By June 15th for PD occurring from September 1 to November 30.

ii.)                 By September 30th for PD occurring from December 1 to February 28.

iii.)               By January 31st for PD occurring from March 1 to June 30.

OECTA and the Board jointly provide funds for professional development opportunities for teachers.  Application for funds are approved by the Wellington OECTA PD Committee and processed through the Board Administration.  The process outlined above is required to allow reasonable timelines to process applications, to ensure fairness, to make the most effective use of limited funds and to meet auditing requirements of the Board and OECTA.
